United Way believes that at the heart of a healthy community are people who care – not just for themselves – but for those around them. When people have the opportunity to connect with others and access services in their neighbourhoods they are more likely to overcome life’s challenges.

For seniors, having a supportive network is vital to one’s health and well-being. Studies have shown that loneliness is as dangerous as smoking. Yet approximately 50% of people over the age of 80 report feeling lonely; men over the age of 80 have the highest suicide rate of all age groups.

United Way donors are bolstering programs and services for seniors like bringing the free, confidential helpline bc211 to the Island;  a Sunday dinner program served by volunteers; a dedicated outreach worker who visits isolated seniors in rental housing to connect them to services they need; or a program that supports frail seniors through the transitions before, during and after hospital stay.

Double your support for seniors

Your donation to support seniors programs could be matched by local committed donors that will double the impact of your gift. Or your donation could be doubled to fund programs that coordinate volunteers – so valuable to many community services. Increasing volunteer resources are beneficial to all. Volunteering not only helps others, but it improves health, happiness and longevity to those who volunteer.

To qualify for a gift match, make a first-time United Way donation or increase your previous United Way gift by 15% or more.*

Many thanks to John and Marvie McEown, John and Catherine Windsor and the Purkis family for providing a total of $130,000 in matching funds for supporting seniors, volunteers and bc211.
