With the one year anniversary of COVID-19 upon us, many adults, youth and children are suffering with anxiety, stress, fear, isolation and depression. Half of Canadians report worsening mental health due to the pandemic.
- COVID-19 has increased the demand on mental health services on southern Vancouver Island by up to 50%.
- In some cases, the need for counselling services has doubled, outreach services are up by 35%, and peer support is up 10%.
As we continue to live through the pandemic, the demand for services will only grow. Anticipating this emerging need, United Way’s BLUE LOVE CAMPAIGN is focused on supporting individuals struggling with their mental health so that they can get help when and where they need it most. BLUE LOVE will also help reduce stressed and overworked frontline agencies in the charitable mental health sector.
Our goal is to raise $1 Million by the end of December 2021 to fund counselling, peer support and outreach services across southern Vancouver Island as well as to raise awareness of mental health.
Funds raised from the campaign will benefit mental health community partners such as:
- Connections Place
- Family Services of Greater Victoria
- Hulitan Family Services
- Greater Victoria Citizens’ Counselling Centre
- Mental Health Recovery Partners
- NEED2 Suicide Prevention, Education & Support
- Pacific Centre Family Services
- South Island Centre for Counselling & Training
- Sooke Family Resource Society
- Vancouver Island Men’s Therapy Centre
If we reach our goal of $1 Million, here’s the difference you can be part of:
The mental health charitable sector could hire up 15 outreach/peer support workers or counsellors to provide help to approximately 9,000 to 15,000 adults, families, children or youth facing mental health challenges. This would equal over 16,000 hours of counselling.

The Blue Love Campaign was inspired by a three year old’s blue painted heart created for Bell Let’s Talk Day. It was shared on social media and a comment was made by an individual struggling with mental health challenges: “Not all hearts are red. Some are black and blue, but are made better because of people like YOU.” And so the Blue Love Campaign began…
