United Way announces the first annual Chair’s Award of Distinction: Malcolm Barker, General Manager and Vice President of Seaspan Victoria Shipyards.

Malcolm’s leadership and commitment to community is best demonstrated by his ongoing support of Seaspan Victoria Shipyards’ United Way workplace campaign. Since the company’s first campaign 20 years ago, they have raised $740,000 to help support a network of social services in Greater Victoria. This success has also led the business to win United Way’s 2014 Outstanding Workplace Campaign Spirit Award.

“Victoria Shipyards is a leader within the Seaspan family of companies for championing community outreach and giving of both time and money to charitable organizations.  The entire shipyard is to be thanked for their amazing efforts, but it is not coincidence that Malcolm’s influence and leadership is a huge reason for both Victoria Shipyards commercial success, and their charitable success,” says Jonathan Whitworth, CEO of Seaspan. “Malcolm upholds Seaspan’s Core Value of “Care for the Community”, which has clearly been demonstrated in his steadfast support of United Way for decades. Malcolm leads by example, both in the Shipyard and with his support of United Way, and everyone at Seaspan is extremely proud that he is being honoured with the Chair’s Award of Distinction.”

On April 17, Malcolm retired from Seaspan Victoria Shipyards and United Way would like to wish him well in his new adventures. Thank you for contributing to our cause!
