Big Holiday Boost for Families in Need: Capital Daily Donation Drive

A Big Holiday Boost to Help Local Families in Need
The Capital Daily Holiday Donation Drive in partnership with United Way will match funds up to $55,000 until December 31, 2020

Victoria, BC (December 22, 2020) – The Capital Daily Holiday Donation Drive, in partnership with United Way, is focused on helping local families in need through a match gift. All gifts made to this holiday donation drive before December 31, 2020 will be matched up dollar for dollar to $55,000 by Victoria-based Tiny Foundation, Heart Pharmacy, Jawl Properties, and an anonymous donor.

The recipients of the donation drive are local neighbourhood houses in the Greater Victoria area including: Beacon Community Association, Burnside Gorge Community Centre, Esquimalt Neighbourhood House Society, Fairfield Gonzales Community Association, Fernwood Neighbourhood Resource Group, James Bay Community Project, Oakland Community Association, Quadra Village Community Centre, Saanich Neighbourhood Place and Sooke Family Resource Society.

Neighbourhood houses are committed to healthy children, youth, families and individuals and offer a range of programs and services including counselling and outreach, pre-natal and post-natal support, preschool and childcare programs, parenting courses, food security programs, fitness classes, clothing and toy exchanges and much more.

“COVID-19 has hit many islanders hard. There has been a toll on our mental health, our relationships and our financial security. Many families are struggling to pay rent and buy groceries,” said Mark Breslauer, CEO, United Way Greater Victoria. “But we are also seeing tremendous generosity of spirit and resources. We are extremely grateful to our partners in this initiative – Capital Daily, Heart Pharmacy, Jawl Properties, Tiny Foundation and an anonymous donor,” he said.

“It’s been such a difficult year for Victoria. We’ve seen our family, friends and neighbours struggle like never before,” said Andrew Wilkinson, co-founder of Tiny, a tech-focused holding group based in Victoria and a benefactor to The Tiny Foundation. “With so many people in need of a break, just a little bit of help, there was an opportunity to unite a few South Island businesses to help out, namely Heart Pharmacy, Jawl Properties and an anonymous donor,” he said.

“Working with the United Way, we saw how tirelessly and how widely The Coalition of Neighbourhood Houses work with families in need across greater Victoria. We are honoured to help them continue their vital work through this holiday funding drive and encourage the rest of our fellow citizens and businesses to do the same if they’re able to.”

DECEMBER 29, 2020 update: We reached our original $55,000 target. Now a local donor has stepped up so that the matching fund has now increased to $75,000. That means that every gift made to this fund before December 31 will be matched up to $75,000. Our goal is now to raise $150,000 for families in need!

JANUARY 1, 2021 update: We did it! We reached our goal of $75,000 that was matched dollar for dollar by Jawl Properties, The Tiny Foundation, Heart Pharmacy, and two anonymous donors. Thank you!
