United Way Greater Victoria and Vancity Combine Forces to Bolster the Community’s Valuable Social Service Sector through the ‘Survive and Thrive’ Program

VICTORIA, BC – Not-for-profit organizations and social enterprises in Greater Victoria can get some much needed assistance in survival and in charting a road to recovery post COVID-19 thanks to new program called Survive and Thrive funded by United Way and Vancity and delivered by Scale Collaborative.

Survive and Thrive will help a minimum of 20 organizations navigate the day-to-day realities through these changing times and provide support to begin preparing for a recovery phase. Program delivery will be conducted by the skilled experts at Scale Collaborative and supported through the partnership with United Way of Greater Victoria and Vancity.

During these unprecedented times, organizations in the ‘community social service sector’ (non-profits, charities, social enterprises and co-ops) may have to scale up to meet increased demand, shift to a new delivery model or services, stay the steady, or ‘hibernate.’ Survive and Thrive combines group coaching, individualized support, peer support, webinars, and resources to help struggling organizations create a new business model.

Survive and Thrive brings:

  • Financial statement review – burn rate, cash flow and short/medium/long term financial implications
  • Financial strategies and scenario planning for next steps
  • Identification of different operational options and strategies whether scaling, experimenting, at steady state or hibernating
  • Guidance on preparing for recovery and re-engagement
  • Peer learning with other organizations facing a similar situation

Survive and Thrive is open to non-profits, charities, social enterprises and co-ops. Support is available regardless of incorporation designation and organizations in Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland can apply. To qualify, organizations are encouraged to complete a short application here. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and organizations will receive approximately 2 months of immediate support.

“Survive and Thrive is one of the first of many funding announcements to come from United Way’s Local Love in a Global Crisis Fund. Providing support to our valuable non-profit sector was a high priority when launching,” said Mark Breslauer, CEO, United Way Greater Victoria.

“The impact of COVID-19 will be lasting and there is growing concern about the community sector’s capacity to adapt operations in order to continue to provide services for our most vulnerable citizens. Survive and Thrive is an innovative solution to this difficult situation. We are pleased to partner with Scale Collaborative and Vancity to help our vital community social service sector.”

“We have seen first-hand the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the not-for-profit and social enterprise community. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Scale Collaborative and United Way Greater Victoria on Survive & Thrive, recognizing the valuable support the program will provide as it guides the sector towards next steps and recovery,” stated Andrea Di Lucca Bustard, Community Investment Portfolio Manager, Vancity.

““Organizations and social enterprises are responding to increased or varied community needs and at the same time, they are facing new financial realities. Survive and Thrive supports leaders as they navigate their operations and finances in these transitional times.  Scale Collaborative is glad to partner with United Way and Vancity to bring new tools and learnings to support the survival and recovery within the sector,” said Kristi Rivait, Co-Founder, Scale Collaborative.
